ADVANCED GRID OBSERVATION RELIABLE ALGORITHMS

AGORA is the most reliable and accurate monitoring, restoration and planning tool available for electric grid network operators.

The main objective underlying the AGORA System - Advanced Grid Observation Reliable Algorithms - is to provide assistance to a transmission or distribution grid/ network operator during normal operation and incidents.

Development of automatic systems for real-time control and decision support modules in electrical power systems requires the availability of intelligent observation and real-time monitoring of the grid, together with analysis and simulation tools to a degree of reliability and precision which is not guaranteed by the traditional methods used in the industry.

The AGORA on-line Observation and Monitoring Elements solves three basic problems:

1. Highly-accurate network observation and state estimation, updated every 30 seconds, even when reliable data is not available from large portions of the network.

2. Simulation of network behaviour and restoration under atypical conditions, including such difficulties as voltage collapse, load-generation unbalance, etc.

3. Quick restoration of the network to normal conditions after small incidents or large black-outs an optimal plan of action.

In 1992 AIA initiated development of an automatic system for electricity grid restoration based on the concept of state-space exploration. AIA rejected the classical line which was being used in similar systems: rule-based expert system. AIA successfully progressed since it had already achieved a breakthrough innovation result with Load Flow algorithms: a non-iterative power Flow Algorithm capable of computing the network close to voltage collapse.
